Neighborhood Ciudad Vieja, zone 10

Guatemala City, November 2006/The Church of Ciudad Vieja or Our Lady of Conception was built as a consequence of transferring the Pueblo de Indios Ciudad Vieja from Sacatepéquez to the Valley of La Ermita in 1777 and was inaugurated on April 5, 1792, as well as its convent.

The church is of Franciscan foundation, for its Marian tradition, but the names of the parsons or priests that were in charge of it are unknown, even those of colonial times. The only reference is found in a file of the General Archive of Central America of 1892, when Elder Priest Federico Virto was its parson and dedicated a verse to the 100 years of foundation of the Villa of Guatemala.

In 1927, the French Pauline Fathers started working again in the temple, which had been completely destroyed by the earthquakes of 1917-18. Mr. Julio Urruela sketched the portico and clay figures

In 1945, this congregation left and the church was left in charge of the priests of the Villa de Guadalupe and Guarda Viejo. Ten years later, it returns to its Parrish condition under the direction of Father Reverend Carlos Sánchez who buys the altarpiece of Villa Nueva and the stain glass windows. Later on, in the year 1971, Father Reverend Monsignor Guillermo Flores y Flores takes charge, and until today he regulates with wisdom and devotion

The temple has been through several remodeling since its foundation in the XVIII Century, being one of the last things, the rebuilding of the frontal area and several internal walls damaged by the earthquake of 1976.

In this workmanship, Engineer Edwin Góngora Arroyo contributed in the choir area, Maestro Alejandro Contreras with the restoration of images and pictures, work that has been carried on in the Restoration Workshops located in the ancient Convent of Santo Domingo. Besides, since 1990, the rectories hall and offices have been added to the structure of the temple and convent, job directed by Engineer Jorge Hernández. Today they are building the Hospital of the Immaculate Conception and Medical Polyclinic Dr. Rodolfo Flores F.

Likewise, it is worth mentioning that according to a Minute dated November 11, 1807, there is a list that details, among other things brought from Ciudad Vieja Antigua Guatemala, an image of Our Lady of Conception with a baroque air of the XVIII Century. This image is located in the high altar of the temple

Other important images are the Virgin of Conception of Solemn Promise, which is the one who is carried on in procession; and the one of Nazarene Jesus of Almolonga, today of Ciudad Vieja, which dates approximately from 1705. This image represents a man carrying the cross, which in spite of the pain and fatigue looks to the children of Jerusalem and comforts them. In style, it is a copy of the famous image of La Merced, which is only distinguished by the spin on his head.

The religious holiday is celebrated in honor of the Virgin of Immaculate Conception on December 8. Besides, the fifth Sunday of Lent, the image of Nazarene Jesus is taken out in procession. On October 1, 2006, they celebrated the inauguration of the Chapel of the Holy One.
